Andy Thewlis
Andy Thewlis: [In Europe,] exhibitors would play Disney only on holiday periods. In fact, for a long time they used to go to France and Germany “cap in hand” begging them to release their pictures. The one that pricked the bubble was Jungle Book, which was the first adult kind of animation that Disney ever made. It was something that really pricked the bubble for us. It took off and made Disney easier to sell ever after. Then Roy saw the situation where we couldn’t expand because their exhibitors were still adamant. In fact, in the early days you could play the first house but not the second house. They put another film for the second house. It was an uphill battle. Then Roy convinced Walt, “We have to get ‘non-Disney’ pictures.” If we are going to expand we have got to play off the holidays.
