A project underway at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, is helping to solve the problem with solid waste disposal by converting community wastes to methane. Joint funding is provided by the U.S. Department of Energy's Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI), the Gas Research Institute (GRI), and Southern California Edison (SCE). Disney's experimental wastewater treatment unit, which normally processes sewage sludge, is being converted to handle solid wastes, or garbage.
