So. Cal. IES honors color, lighting achievements

Lighting effects in the Nutcracker Suite of "Fantasia" won for Walt Disney a citation of merit from the Southern California section of the Illuminating Engineering Society, presented at a banquet on Tuesday night, April 22, at the Disney Studios in Burbank. About 300 IES members and guests witnessed the presentation of a beautiful hand lettered and illuminated parchment by Frank A. Hansen, director of the Western Institute of Light and Vision and Pacific regional vice-president of IES.

Inscription on the scroll was:

"The Southern California section of the Illuminating Engineering Society confers this citation upon Walt Disney, world renowned master of whimsical art, for fidelity and imagination in the creation of inspiringly beautiful effects with lighting, reaching new heights in the Nutcracker Suite of ‘Fantasia."

The citation now is hung in the famous Disney trophy room, which contains the "Oscar" statuette award received from the moving picture industry for "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," and the many other honors and gifts that have come to the creator of Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Pinocchio and others.

The meeting was distinguished by the presence of A. D. Cameron of New York, national IES president, who gave a short talk on the part IES is taking in strengthening national defense.
