Eric Gurney interview and letters to Eric Gurney
Story artist Eric Gurney was born on March 16, 1910, in Winnipeg, Man- itoba, Canada. He was hired by Disney as an apprentice inbetweener on March 7, 1938. While in the Animation Department he worked on sev- eral Pluto shorts, including Pantry Pirate (1940), A Gentleman’s Gentleman (1941), Canine Caddy (1941), Lend a Paw (1941), The Sleep Walker (1942), and Pluto and the Armadillo (1943), as well as on the Donald short Sky Trooper (1942). At some point during World War II, he was transferred to the Story Department, where he worked on many stories for other Pluto shorts, including Springtime for Pluto (1944), The Legend of Coyote Rock (1945), Dog Watch (1945), Figaro and Frankie (1946), Bath Day (1946), Mail Dog (1947), Pluto’s Surprise Package (1947), Pluto’s Sweater (1947), Rescue Dog (1947), Cat Nap Pluto (1948), Pueblo Pluto (1949), Sheep Dog (1949), and Bubble Bee (1949). He was also involved in the “Peter and the Wolf” and “Casey at the Bat” sequences for Make Mine Music (1946). He resigned from the Disney Studio on August 15, 1947, and soon became a successful book illustrator. He passed away on November 17, 1992, in Tucson, Arizona.
