The three letters included in this chapter were written to Bob Givens’ teacher and friend Hardie Gramatky. Along with Millard Sheets, Phil Dike, Rex Brandt, and Barse Miller, Gramatky was one of the founders of the California School of Watercolor. He studied at Chouinard tarting in 1928 and worked at the Disney studio from 1930 to 1936, by which time he decided to move to New York. His book, Little Toot, published in 1939, became a best-seller and was brought to the screen by Disney as part of the package feature Melody Time. The letters from Bob Givens to Hardie Gramatky were kindly provided by Hardie’s daughter, Linda Smith.
