Disneyland Summer 1959
Los Angeles Times supplement
By Walt Disney "When Disneyland opened four years ago, I said that it would never be completed, that there would always be something new and different for you and your family to enjoy. "Now, as we begin our fifth year, I am happy to tell you that all of us at Disneyland have been busy fulfilling that promise. "During the past few months our artists, designers, engineers, and construction people have been hard at work completing Disneyland's biggest expansion program since the Park first opened in the Summer of 1955. And now this year’s program is all completed – the Matterhorn Mountain with its two bobsled runs; two new Motorboat Cruises; our Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System with its two sleek ultra-modern trains; and the Disneyland fleet of eight submarines for our Undersea Voyage – all are ready for you and your family to enjoy this Summer. These new adventures will be found in the area between Tomorrowland and Fantasyland. "Here you'll board authentic Submarines, designed, with the technical assistance of experts from General Dynamics Corporation, to learn first-hand about the mysterious world of ‘liquid space' beneath the Seven Seas; race in bobsleds down the steep ‘snow capped' slopes of Matterhorn Mountain; and preview the fixture in rapid transportation for America's major cities on the Disneyland-Alweg Monorail System, which you will board after riding the speedramp, a moving sidewalk, to the elevated Monorail platform. "In the same area, some of our most popular attractions have now added important new features: the Skyway, traveling high above Disneyland, now passes directly through ice caverns inside the Matterhorn; four new multilevel Autopia Freeways are ready to safely test the driving skills of youngsters of all ages; and there are also two new motor boat cruises, complete with rock-filled rapids. "On these pages, artists’ drawings will introduce you to Disneyland's latest adventures, and photographs will reacquaint you with many of the popular attractions in the Magic Kingdom. "Since our opening, four years ago, Disneyland has played host in millions of Southern California families, as well as additional millions of other Americans and foreign visitors from all over the world. All of us at Disneyland appreciate this privilege and it is my sincere hope that you will find as much pleasure and enjoyment in Disneyland's new adventures this Summer as we had in creating them for you."
