Fluid drives for smoother rides at Disneyland
Fantasy may be the keynote in fabulous Disneyland at Anaheim, California, but when it gets down to the design and construction of the various rides offered the small fry set ( and adults, too ), the engineers and manufacturers took their usual realistic approach to the matters at hand. For example, fluid drives are incorporated in many of the amusement rides . . . rides like the Mad Tea Party, Dumbo, King Arthur Carrousel and others. The reason for this is to provide smooth, effortless starting of the rides for the comfort and safety of the riders. The Mad Tea Party typifies the chive arrangement for many of the rides. This is a large revolving turntable supporting three smaller turntables. Each of the smaller ones supports several cups and saucers in which patrons ride. In motion, all components revolve, giving the riders the effect of traveling in many different directions at the same time. The main turntable is powered by four 7.5-hp motors, each equipped with a Twin Disc 9.5- HYDRO-SHEAVE® Drive. From each HYDRO-SHEAVE, V-belts transmit power to a 13:1 speed reducer. The speed reducer's output shaft powers a vertically mounted pneumatic tire which supports the turntable. Turntable motion is accomplished solely through friction between the driving tire and the turntable race. Idler tires, of course, help support the turntable's weight. Another popular ride is Dumbo, which features small sized replicas of Walt Disney's famed character, "Dumbo, the flying elephant." Youngsters ride in the "Dumbos" .. . which travel in circular and vertical directions simultaneously. The drive for Dumbo consists of two 9.5 HYDRO-SHEAVES, each transmitting power from a 7.5-hp motor. The drive train is the same as that of the Mad Tea Party. No amusement park could ever be considered complete without the perennial favorite of all amusement rides – the carrousel. And even here a fluid drive comes into play, this one an 8.5 HYDRO-SHEAVE mounted on a 5-hp motor. Besides the comfort and safety the Twin Disc HYDRO-SHEAVES lend to the various amusement rides at Disneyland, they offer other advantages, too. They cushion out equipment-wearing vibrations and destructive shocks between driving and driven equipment ... they reduce motor starting demands ... they protect against overloads, stalling and burn-outs ... and they permit motor selection based on running loads rather than starting load requirements.
