Monsanto House of the Future
A Demonstration of Structural Applications of Plastics
This unique building is an experimental design demonstrating structural applications of plastics. It represents one part of Monsanto's comprehensive program to broaden and facilitate the general use of chemicals, plastics and petroleum products throughout industry – in this case, the home construction and furnishings markets. The erection of the Monsanto "Plastics Home of the Future" at Disneyland in the summer of 1957 provided a practical demonstration of the almost limitless potential of plastics in structural applications. The basic construction material is plastic reinforced with fibrous glass. Design components are a 16-foot-square utility core and eight 8 x 16-foot U-shaped molded modules. The winged design in the shape of a cross assures full daylight for every room, reduces inter-room noise and provides added privacy for various family activities. Various combinations of the design components, including the use of twin cores, make it possible to achieve a variety of floor plans.
