GRIM NATWICK: I admired them all. When I was in my late twenties I studied in Vienna for three years and altogether I spent about four years in Europe. I covered all the galleries in France and Spain and Italy—not all of them, of course, but many of them. Actually, I had hoped to become a serious painter, but the tragedy of the serious painter is, beginning back at the time of Picasso, when the camera came in it almost eliminated the portrait painter.
